C-Level Manager

C-Level Managers are not always personally involved in specific innovation projects – but they give direction to everything we do in the innovation space. They define the company’s vision and strategy and ultimately determine which ideas and projects make strategic sense. And they set the tone for how a company thinks about and deals with innovation.

C-Level Managers provide the context for every innovation activity. They define the culture, set the tone and the ambition for innovation – and empower middle management to make innovation an essential part of their work. Very often, however, C-Level Managers are far removed from the innovation management system and from specific projects. This is one of the key reasons why innovation activities fail. Innovation management in general – and Business Design in particular – are essential tools for implementing their vision (“Picture of the Future”) and strategy. That is why they should be involved on a regular basis. Innovation Managers and Project Sponsors should have direct access to C-Level Managers and actively include them wherever possible. Their role is to:

  • Define the company’s vision and strategy

  • Define goals and ambition for innovation and growth

  • Set the tone and culture around innovation and the expected behaviour of employees

Hence, C-Level Managers are responsible for providing strategic guidance and shaping the innovation culture of their company. Employees won’t work on innovation if it is not desired and demanded by C-Level Management. Key responsibilities include:

  • Defining and updating the company’s vision, strategy and goals for the future

  • Establishing a modern innovation management system based on the principles of Business Design

  • Encouraging middle management and all employees to embrace innovation and use the innovation management system accordingly. Innovative work is not voluntary!

  • Providing psychological safety for everyone who works on innovation

  • Being a role model for forward-thinking leadership that lives up to the principles of Business Design

  • Giving feedback during key initiatives and projects to reassess their strategic fit

  • Supporting highly strategic projects – even as a Project Sponsor
